Why We’re Not Thriving (and What to Do About It)
Let’s get straight to it: most of us aren’t thriving the way we could be. Sure, we all know how to hustle, how to check off the boxes, and how to reach for goals. But deep down, we also know that there’s more to life than just getting by. There’s a deeper level of fulfillment we’re not tapping into, a whole realm of satisfaction, peace, and purpose that feels just out of reach.
So why are so many of us struggling to truly thrive? Because we were never taught how to thrive holistically. We were handed a rulebook on how to “succeed” according to society’s standards but not how to live in alignment with our soul. The truth is, real thriving doesn’t come from just following the rules or looking outside ourselves for validation. It begins with aligning our inner world and awakening to the patterns that shape every aspect of our lives.
The Principle of As Above, So Below
A huge Hermetic tenet that guides me in life and my work is As Above, So Below. This principle hits hard: what’s going on inside us—our beliefs, fears, and desires—isn’t just background noise; it’s actively shaping the world around us. We’re not bystanders in our own lives—we’re co-creators. If we’re carrying self-doubt, fear, or scarcity within, that’s exactly what we’re going to see reflected in our health, relationships, careers, and overall happiness.
As Hermes Trismegistus, the legendary figure behind this ancient wisdom, expressed:
“As above, so below; as within, so without; as the universe, so the soul.”
This phrase embodies the idea that the macrocosm (the vast universe) is mirrored in the microcosm (our individual selves). It’s a reminder that everything is connected—our inner world is a blueprint for our outer reality. In many spiritual and esoteric traditions, this concept is foundational, driving home the unity between the self and the cosmos.
If we want to thrive—physically, emotionally, spiritually—then the real work begins within. Here are a few core principles of As Above, So Below to help you make meaningful changes from the inside out.
1. Inner-Outer Reflection: Your Inner World Mirrors Your Outer Reality
Our thoughts, beliefs, and emotional patterns are like a lens through which we see the world. If we’re constantly focused on scarcity, we’ll notice all the ways there isn’t “enough” around us—whether it’s in relationships, career opportunities, finances or even in simple daily interactions. But when we shift that inner focus toward becoming aware of the lackful patterns we habitually perpetuate and learn how to re-direct them to the presence of what is innately abundant and ever-present, opportunities begin to show up because we’ve done the work to repattern them.
Takeaway: If you’re feeling blocked or stuck, look at the beliefs you’re holding about yourself and life. Are they helping you, or are they holding you back? Has this been a pattern that you see show up over and over again?
2. The Macrocosm and Microcosm: You’re a Universe Within
Just as the universe is vast and interconnected, so are we. Our bodies, minds, and souls hold the same cycles, rhythms, and patterns as the natural world. Recognizing this connection opens us up to a greater truth: we’re not isolated; we’re intrinsically linked to all of creation. There’s a deeper power within you—waiting to be tapped into—that holds the potential to create a more magical, thriving life.
Takeaway: When you feel small or disconnected, remember that the same life force that created stars and oceans is within you. You’re a vital piece of this incredible puzzle.
3. The Law of Correspondence: Shift in One Area, Shift in All
When we transform one area of our inner life, it ripples outward. Healing emotional wounds, for example, might lead to unexpected improvements in health or relationships. Everything is interconnected, so progress in one area of our lives often leads to transformation in others.
Takeaway: Start with small, achievable shifts. You don’t need to fix everything at once. Focus on a single pattern—maybe it’s self-doubt, a fear of failure, or perfectionism. Work with that, and notice how it positively impacts other areas.
4. Harmony and Balance Between Inner and Outer Worlds
True thriving requires alignment between our inner beliefs and outer actions. When our actions reflect our values and intentions, life flows more naturally. Misalignment, on the other hand, breeds tension, burnout, and confusion.
Takeaway: Take an honest look at your life and ask, “Where am I not aligned?” Are you saying yes to things that don’t resonate? Are you allowing others’ opinions to dictate your path? Real alignment often means saying no more often and standing in your truth.
5. The Power of Creation and Manifestation
Our inner state—the intentions, emotions, and visions we hold—creates the outer reality we experience. When we consciously cultivate inner peace, clarity, and purpose, we become active co-creators of our lives. By understanding how to design and master our inner world, we can draw forth the outer experiences that feel most meaningful and aligned.
Takeaway: Spend time visualizing what true thriving looks like for you. Feel it, believe it, and allow that to clarify the old outdated patters that hold you back, while setting the intention to guide new, more aligned actions. Manifestation isn’t about wishful thinking; it’s about aligning your energy and actions with your deepest desires.
6. Unity and Interconnectedness: You’re Never Truly Alone
The As Above, So Below principle teaches that we’re all connected. Our actions, thoughts, and intentions ripple outward, impacting those around us and the collective whole. This interconnectedness reminds us that we’re part of a larger journey, and that inner work benefits not just ourselves but everyone around us.
Takeaway: When you work on yourself, you’re doing more than just “self-care.” You’re elevating everyone you come into contact with. Personal growth has a ripple effect that creates change on a much larger scale.
Ready to Start Thriving? Take the Self-Assessment
True thriving begins with an honest look inward. Below is a simple self-assessment to help you see where you stand. Score yourself from 1 (never) to 5 (always) on each question. Tally up your score, and if it feels lower than you’d like, consider this an invitation to dive deeper into this work.
- Do I approach each day with a sense of expansion or purpose?
- DO I have a way of shifting from constant loops of self-doubt or fear of failure?
- Do my relationships feel nourishing, or do I feel drained?
- Am I in a career or life path that feels aligned with my soul?
- Do I care for my health and body as though they are sacred?

Final Thoughts: Awakening to the Divine Consciousness Within
Ultimately, thriving isn’t just about feeling better. It’s about awakening to the divine consciousness within us all—the part of us that knows our worth, our purpose, and our power. Without connecting to that essence, any form of “success” remains superficial.
So let’s begin this journey from the inside out. Together, we’ll explore how to align with that inner wisdom and create a life that’s not only fulfilling but also deeply meaningful.
